The History of the 2021 Quarter Value

The year 2021 was interesting in the history of United States coinage. That year, the United States Mint issued two quarters: The 2021 Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site quarter and the General George Washington Crossing the Delaware River quarter.

The Tuskegee quarter was the last coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters series from 2010 to 2021. The series sought to celebrate a national park or national site in each state, territory and District of Columbia.

In all, the Mint struck 56 quarters as part of the America the Beautiful series. The quarter featuring the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site was the final one in the series struck in 2021.

After issuing this last coin, the Mint significantly changed the quarter’s design. This time, the new quarter featured a portrait of President George Washington’s left-facing bust as originally designed by John Flanagan.

The design changes were mostly seen on the reverse of the coin. In place of the Tuskegee Historic Site or the usual Heraldic Eagle, the mint opted for a portrait of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, where he led his troops across the Delaware River in December 1776 in preparation for the Battle of Trenton.

The voyage across the Delaware River was symbolic—it symbolized America’s fierce battle for independence against the invading British colonialists and Hessian troops.

The Mint didn’t explain why it issued the transitional Washington Crossing the Delaware quarter. What is certain, though, is that this coin is iconic and will easily become a collectors’ favourite in a few years.

In the background is an image of the river and the boat ferrying American troops. In the foreground is General Washington holding a battle sword in one hand as he commands his troops.

The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appear at the top of the coin along the inner rim, followed by the motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, which means Out of Many, One.

The inscription, CROSSING DELAWARE, is etched on the top right side of the coin. Michael Guadisio sculpted the reverse design, while Benjamin Soward designed it.

On the left, you will notice the initials BS representing Benjamin Soward, while Michael Guadisio’s initials appear to the right.

Other Features of the 2021 Quarter

The 2021 Washington quarter is made of a copper-nickel composition. It weighs 5.67g and measures 24.26 mm.

This coin has a reeded edge with a total of 119 grooves around the diameter.

As mentioned, these coins have a mint mark P, D or S on the obverse, signifying their minting location in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco, respectively. The San Francisco Mint issued clad proofs and silver proof 2021 quarters.

2021 Quarter Grading

Although most 2021 quarters were released into circulation and are common in pocket change, these coins are generally in good condition.

Circulated examples will likely only have slight wear on high contact points. On the obverse, look for signs of smoothing on Washington’s cheek, neck area, the top of his hair and the hair curling around his ears.

On the reverse, the high contact spots most prone to wear and smoothing include General George Wahington’s portrait, the boat in the background, and the inscriptions at the bottom (QUARTER DOLLAR).

The inscriptions CROSSING THE DELAWARE are also a common high contact point prone to smoothing in circulated quarters.

A 2021 quarter is in mint state or uncirculated if there are minimal to no contact marks, hairlines or other imperfections. Check for a strong, brilliant luster and eye appeal from the reflective surface on the obverse and reverse.

A high mintage means these coins are widely circulated, readily available and affordable even for the new hobbyist.

Most of the 2021-P quarters were released into circulation, but a few remain uncirculated. Circulated quarters are worth their face value of $0.25.

Uncirculated examples are readily available in MS60 to MS67 and are generally worth about $1.16. Specimens graded MS68 to MS70 are scarce and can fetch much more than face value.

The Denver mint also produced 2021 quarters amounting to about 865,400,000. This is yet another high-mintage production; as you might expect, these coins are currently very affordable.

Circulated 2021-D quarters are worth their face value of $0.25. Most of these coins were released into circulation and are widely available as pocket change, so they don’t yet attract premium figures.

Uncirculated 2021-D Crossing the Delaware quarters are equally affordable. These sell for about $1.16 when graded MS60 to MS65, but gem-quality examples graded MS66 to MS70 may bring in slightly more.

The most valuable 2021-D quarter is graded MS69 and was sold for $995 at an eBay auction in 2022.

These proof quarters were made for and sold to collectors. They are considerably higher quality than the regular strike 2021 quarters, with a shinier, smoother, more reflective surface.

A 2021-S clad quarter-graded MS65 is worth about $5.26, while a rare specimen-graded MS69 can fetch as much as $18.

The most valuable 2021-S clad Crossing the Delaware quarter is graded MS70 and was auctioned for $51 in a 2021 eBay sale.

Rare 2021 Quarter Errors List

Errors are inevitable during minting. Although errors can make a coin appear odd, they can also significantly increase its value.

These errors add an element of uniqueness, which collectors look for when adding coins to their collections.

Here are the most important 2021 Quarter errors worth money to look out for:

2021 Feeder Finger Quarter Error

2021 Quarter Coin Value (Errors List, “D”, “S” & “P” Mint Mark Worth) (10)

As the name suggests, feeder fingers feed planchets into the coining chamber during minting. Sometimes, the feed can malfunction and fail to retract, so the dies strike them.

When the dies strike the feeder fingers, the result is horizontal, closely spaced parallel ridges on the coin’s reverse.

2021 Crossing The Delaware quarters with a feeder finger error can fetch as much as $30, but uncirculated examples can be worth more.

2021 Crown Die Chip Quarter Error

2021 Quarter Coin Value (Errors List, “D”, “S” & “P” Mint Mark Worth) (11)

The crown die chip is the most popular error in the Crossing the Delaware 2021 quarters.

A die chip happens when a crack in the die is impressed on the coin. When this crack fills up with metal, it results in a raise or bump on the coin’s surface.

In the case of the 2021 quarter, there is a bump on the top of General Washington’s cap on the reverse. The more visible the bump, the more valuable the error. This error most appears on 2021-P Crossing the Delaware quarters.

A crown die chip error in 2021 quarters is worth as much as $200 but can bring in more if uncirculated.

2021 Snake Eye, Lip Mole Die Chip Quarter Error

2021 Quarter Coin Value (Errors List, “D”, “S” & “P” Mint Mark Worth) (13)

This is a recently discovered error seen on the obverse of the 2021 quarters. The die chips appear on Washington’s eyelid towards the side and on top of his lip, leaving a mole-like appearance.

So far, collectors are willing to pay as much as $1,500 for the snake eye and lip mole 2021 quarter error. Whether this price will come down and stabilize will depend on whether more of these error coins will be discovered.

These new error coins are rare, but they might become more affordable if more are discovered in the future.
